A great day for a cruise.

Finally the weather seems much more settled and so pleased to have such gorgeous days to be in the Moselle. Last year we were here in the Autumn, the hills were clothed in oranges and reds and everyone was busy finishing the harvest. Now, with a patchwork of greens there appears to be a bit of a lull before harvest starts in 2 or 3 weeks.
This morning soon after 8, there was quite a bit of tooting nearby, the bread van had arrived and everyone rushed out to get their morning buns. He does a good trade as there is no store in this small village.
Off on our bikes, over the bridge and joined the cycle trail North towards Trittenheim. We could not believe the numbers of people riding, estimating we passed 400 – 500 cyclists and many were older….made us feel quite young! E-bikes have really opened up a new avenue of exercise. There was a great atmosphere amongst the cyclists, everyone smiled and said hello. And I have to say there were some rather interesting sights, of larger men who were wearing lycra cycle outfits – not pretty!!!
It was so enjoyable as we passed such a variety of scenery, small towns, boats and even stopped at the lock to check it out. There are many biergarten’s (cafes) beside the cycle track doing a roaring trade, and we finally succumbed, parked the bikes and enjoyed a really nice salad lunch…and a glass of the local Riesling!
Quite a drop in this lock.

Really good bike tracks

Vines everywhere.

Last year we drove past these little "train" units that ride on a rail
up the very steep slopes the vines are on. Good to get a closeup.

HAHA!!!

Very pleasant stop.
Continued on to Trittenheim, before turning back after 20s kms and returning home….another great ride.
Surprised to see two river boats pulled up near the campsite with heaps of bikes parked outside. Checked their names out online and found they do cycle/boat trips. These ones on the Moselle are for 7 days and they travel from Saarburg on the Saar River through to Koblenz at the end of the Moselle where it reaches the Rhine. Passengers hire a bike for the trip from the company, and each day they cycle to the next destination. All meals are provided including a packed lunch for the ride, and they have their own cabin. I think they only take about 70 passengers. Certainly sounds like a great idea.
Bikes and more bikes for the bike/boat trips.

Glad the weather has perked up for you! Interesting locks aren't they? Over the Continental Divide on the Main/Danube/Rhine canal system we went through 3 locks that were each 29m high! Amazing engineering onthat system. Several aqueducts. Strange to be on a large boat in a large river crossing over a road underneath! Sounds like you are really enjoying the bikes. You'll have to invest in some back home. xxx Coxes

Great to hear from you Jenny and Brian. Just seen all your photos, you had a great trip too. Loving our bikes, and will miss them back home, but cycling at Tarawera is not very safe! Will look forward to using them again next year!
