Moat enterance in the Castle at Angers

Got chatting to Mike and Lindsay again this morning, and before we knew it the morning had disappeared. They were cycling into Angers as well. It was a very pleasant 8km ride into town especially as the weather has really cooled down and it actually rained quite a lot overnight. It is quite a busy Voie Verte with lots of families cycling as well as many people walking on it.
River boats.
We stopped for lunch at a pop up style casual café that had been set up beside the cycle track just before the city, ….needed some sustenance as this town has a population of over 150,000!
We followed the bike path signs which took us on a cycle lane over the bridge into town, buses and cars whizzing past not far away, trying not to feel too nervous and get the wobbles! Took the pedestrian crossing across the main road to the quieter roads towards the castle, a very impressive Medieval building with 17 huge towers and a drawbridge. The moat no longer holds water, but now has a beautiful garden that you can look down upon.
What was the moat is now gardens.
Panorama view of the Main River from the castle.
Loved the old streets in the city.

Half timbered houses
We had some great views of the city looking down the Main River, then we meandered along the cobbled lanes in the old part of the city with its half-timbered houses before arriving in the town square with all its very nice upmarket stores. We cycled around the carless streets of this area and I popped into a few stores while Ian very “patiently” waited sitting in his “rolls” and looking after my bike.
An old monastery on the Main from the cycle route.
Really enjoyed our visit to the city today, and good to get back on our bikes. A pleasant 8kms cycle back to the camp and while Ian put his feet up, I continued on along the cycle track and checked out the rather nice village of La Pointe where the Main joins the Loire. With the temperatures in the low 20’s, it has been so much easier and enjoyable looking around today. This evening we sat outside with Mike and Lindsay, enjoying more Kiwi chattering!
This English couple were taking their dogs for a ride!
