Bath time for Ruakiwi. |
Well we finally decided that we
had enough of the 36 degree temperatures that were predicted to continue in the
South and we have headed north into the hills of the Massif Central, with
temperatures decidedly cooler in the high 20’s. When we left camp this morning
at 9am, the temperatures had already reached 27.
After yesterday’s rather
forgettable day, today has been such a contrast. Took the road West to Arles, which
passed by so many vineyards, stopped for supplies and also found a carwash with
an outside bay for “Camping cars” as Ruakiwi has been looking very grubby. This
was the best we have ever been into and for €6 she is sparkling clean again.

A few drive by shots of towns from today. |

The road passed through some villages and you just hoped" you didn't meet another vehicle - especially a truck. | |

Old roman ruins. |
We took the N106, a great road
which climbed up into the hills and down into a valley and the town of Florac
before climbing up again and down to Mende. It was a great drive, the road was
pretty good and very little traffic. Breath-taking scenery with small villages
dotted in amongst the rocky faces. Much more green and verdant than in the
rather arid southern areas we have been in and have enjoyed the contrast – and
the cooler temperatures at this high altitude! Arrived at an Aire which is
beside a weir on the Lot River, so nice to hear the sound of running water. It
is a carpark and the spaces are not big between the vans, but adequate. Walked
past a van with GB plates and ended up sitting and chatting with two English couples
over a few cold beers!! A rather pleasant start to our stay here.
Really enjoying the cooler air
and after dinner we wandered into the old town which surrounds the cathedral.
The cobbled streets are so narrow lined with old houses, some of the shutters
were open and you could hear the sounds of families inside. This is a really
nice old town.
