Saturday October 22 Trier – On the Mosel River

View from the Roman Bridge over the Mosel River as we walked back to camp.

It was a cold grey morning with a few spits of rain, didn’t seem to be any great hurry to get up! Emptied and filled up all the necessaries before leaving mid-morning. We needed to replace our doormat and had finally found a DIY store called Obi a few days ago, so checked up and there was an Obi in town only about 5 minutes’ drive from where we were camped. So that was our first stop. Got the mat and Ian enjoyed a bit of boys time wandering around the store. Found they had free wifi and could pick it up in the van so managed to have a catch up with my blog and load the last few days.
It was an easy drive to Landstuhl on HW 62 through the mist, odd spits of rain and temperatures about 6 degrees…and not many cars on the road. Had read that this town had the largest American Air Force Hospital outside the USA, thought I might hear some American accents when we stopped for some lunch supplies, but nothing.
Set Jilly for Trier and we had the best drive yet on a German autobahn, hardly any traffic and very few trucks on the road. Much of the road was through forest land with the odd pocket of farmland and we just cruised for almost one and half hours. The weather improved and the sky lightened.
We wound down to Trier and such a great sight with the Mosel River winding through and vineyards up the hillsides. Trier is a very historic town dating back to Roman times, looking forward to walking around town tomorrow. Set Jilly for a Stellplatz on the riverbank, a large number of motorhomes already here but plenty of space and it has a good feel to it. Settled in and did a few well needed domestic chores including defrosting the fridge.
Late afternoon we put our jackets and boots on and headed along the river bank and into town, a very pleasant walk, although much longer than we expected as were looking for a nice place to sit and have a drink and something to eat. Ended up in the centre of town which was really alive with music playing and people and families wandering around. Found a nice spot to sit and people watch over some local (and very good) Riesling and some pub type food.
It was getting quite cold as we meandered home, but a beautiful clear evening, so hoping for a nice day tomorrow to head back and explore the town.

Beauty and the beast...wonderful autumn colours on a wall covered in grafitti

Loving your pix Meg. The antiquity always amazing isn't it? There's just a small possibility that 3 BayView and 541 Spencer may not last 400 years...
