Monday October 24 Trittenheim

The view from our overnight spot...picture perfect.
Went to bed with some spits of rain on the roof which continued all night and by this morning it was raining quite a lot. So, decided it wasn’t worth rushing especially as we are having a very slow week with not too many km’s, just following the Mosel as it winds its way north to the Rhine at Koblenz.

Headed to an Edeka supermarket near camp only to find the car park wasn’t up to Ruakiwi so back across the river and started our trip along HW53. Once we left Trier and the busy traffic the rain eased and the misty views were just beautiful. This is in the heart of the Mosel wine country, famous for its Rieslings. Even through the mist the autumn colours continue to amaze, with lots of yellow leaves and the vines that cling to the hills are turning yellow.
Found an Edeka at the town of Schweich and stocked up on supplies and continued onto a Stellplatz at Klusserath for a lunch stop. Got chatting to Armin, an Austrian, who sold his house and for the last 18 months he and his partner have been living on the road. Really enjoyed meeting him, and learning about their travels.
Decided to continue on a bit further, no issues as the Mosel is just lined with Stellplatz’s and another 5 km’s in the town of Trittenheim we found a great place to stop only a few metres from the Mosel, the steep hills on the other side of the river are covered in vines and we are only a few hundred metres from the village. Enjoying watching the barges passing directly in front of our van.
Ambled into town late this afternoon and called into a restaurant and enjoyed a glass of the local Riesling which was so good. Evidently made from grapes hand picked off the steep hills and loved the name of the winery … “Trittenheimer Apotheke”. I picked up on the word Apotheke as being the German word for pharmacy and it was explained as meaning “two glasses of wine is better than any medicine you can buy”….suits me!
Xmas chocolates in Edeka

A really nice young lad helped us in Edeka with our meat selection.

Wonderful old tractors used by the wineries

Breathtaking view from our camp.

This really is steep country that the vines are on.

Rain drops on the last of summer roses.

We see lots of barges (110metres long)  going along the river and they all have some sort of transport on the back.
This was a first, not only a car and a boat, but a jetski. There appears to be a crane on board that lifts them off.

Looks like it's turning into fall. Beautiful colors. The vineyards loook like Napa Valley. Just a little bit steeper. When will you two be heading back to NZ?
