The Brownlow Arms at Hough on the Hill |
Another wonderful day with our personal guides, making
sure we really get a feel of this part of the country.
We all slept in after our late night, my cold is really annoying
but not stopping me from doing things.
Steve hauled Ian down to the new property which sits on
an acre of land and set him off on the ride on lawn mower...the smile on his
face says it all.
But the highlight for the day was a pub lunch, and not just
any pub lunch.....this one has won many awards and booking several weeks ahead
is essential. The Brownlow Arms is a 17th century Country Inn formerly owned by
Lord Brownlow.
It was an hours drive from home, through the fens and up
into rolling countryside dotted with old homes, trees and animals. The little
village of Hough on the Hill is just so picturesque.
Sitting back in wing chairs in the bar with a glass of
wine, old beam ceilings and fire places, life is pretty darn good. It was mid
afternoon so it seemed just right to do the three course menu. The highlight
was the main, and we all ordered the same,
roast beef ( cooked perfectly to medium rare and just so tender) , with
Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings. The entrees and deserts were pretty
special too. A very grand way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We needed to stretch
our legs after that so wandered around the village church and very old
graveyard..could of spent hours checking out the headstones.
On the way home we called into Belton House, a grade 1
listed house that now belongs to the National Trust and is open to the public.
There were families wandering around the grounds enjoying a summers afternoon
in the park as well as some fallow deer.
I was in bed by 7.30, my cold getting the better of me,
but tomorrow is another day.
