Monday July 11 Boston – Lincoln – Boston
Finally - inspecting Ruakiwi 2, our new home for the next 4 months |
Yes, finally today we met Ruakiwi Mark 2 and have smiles
all over our faces! More later.
After a very good night’s sleep feel as though I am
winning with the cold now...thanks so much for everyone’s good wishes, and
advice.
It has been a very big day, leaving Boston about 10am for
the hour’s drive to Lincoln leaving the Fen’s behind and up into the rolling
hills. Beautiful countryside with little villages dotted along the way, most
with their own pub.
Lincoln Cathedral, sitting atop a hill with its very tall
spires is a real focus. Steve drove up and luckily there was a parking space,
so had a quick walk around, though no time today to go inside. Still find it
hard to comprehend that the building commenced in 1088, over 900 years ago and
it is still standing, although there have been many additions over the years.
Then it was onto Camper UK where Ruakiwi has been for a
few weeks having a general check up and a few extras fitted before we hit the
road.
Having only seen photos, it was such a thrill to actually
walk into it, open cupboards, sit at the table, lie on the bed and get the feel
of it. And we are over the moon, it is in immaculate order and very compact and
functional. We are going to be very comfortable making her our home while we
travel.
There were several changes that needed to be made for it
to comply to UK requirements, including changing the speedo to show MPH, which
have all been done. We collected a document from the company saying this had
been done and it was couriered of to the DVLA where in hopefully 3 or 4 working
days they will rubber stamp it, return it to us, then we have to courier that off
to get our registration number…maybe another 3 or 4 days???? There is no way
around it so we just have to be patient. And as our insurance company will only
insure it with a registration number, and not the VIN number, we are unable to
drive it until that number arrives. So locked her up and left her behind.
But on a bright note had some retail therapy, went to
Dunelm, a very large home furnishing store (probably like Farmer’s in NZ) and
bought bedding, crockery and cutlery for Ruakiwi. Kathy and I had lots of fun,
the trolley was full, and we loaded it into Ruakiwi when we had finished. A
very satisfying afternoon.
Back home to Boston and into Tate’s Fish and Chip shop
for a traditional dinner of haddock, chips and mushy peas. You will be pleased
to know that I couldn’t eat it all, but it was very nice and so fresh.
Steve finished today’s grand tour with a look at the
fishing boats siting on the mud at low tide on the Grantham River. There is a
fishing industry based on cockles, most of which end up in France. In parts
there is a sense of dereliction with the rotten wooden hulls sitting in the
mud, partly submerged.
When we got home about 8pm, Steve thought Ian needed to
go for a spin in his Aston Martin…in the passenger seat! Ian was most impressed
especially when it hit 150mph in a very short space of time.
I managed to stay up until 10pm tonight, so really on the
mend.
