Monday Jun 27, Campbell River, BC

A very low key start to the day, woke to rain on the roof, and somehow the book seemed a better option than getting up early. Drove around Port Hardy in the rain, a pretty ordinary sort of place, but the best part was seeing three eagles sitting on posts in the estuary, in the rain. Initially thought they were statues, made Ian turn around and sure enough they were the real thing. There is something so stately about these birds.

Then it was south back down the highway to Campbell River, an easy drive as the roads are so good.

We had the generator serviced at the start of the trip in Anacortes as it needed a new muffler, so thought it a good opportunity to get all the work done. Anyway went to use it yesterday and although it started, it wouldn’t keep going. Checked online last night and found an agent for Onan Generators in Campbell River, so called in there this afternoon. They were brilliant. Found the filter needed replacing but also the fuel pump in the generator wasn’t working. They couldn’t get parts in from Vancouver until Wednesday, so an enforced stay for a few days in town.

Actually it is a great town, full of interesting shops and right on the inside passage with a huge marina. Staying at a campground on the spit overlooking it, very pleasant and easy walking distance to town. Also to the pub overlooking the marina….so wandered down this evening and had a few beers and a very nice meal. Ian had his first spare ribs of the trip and gave them a thumbs up.
