Friday July1, Half Moon Bay, BC…..Canada Day
Yesterday when we were watching the kayakers at the rapids we got talking to two young couples from Calgary. They were staying at their parents cabin a bit further down the coast and offered us a park for the night in their driveway, so that is where we are.
It rained during the night and was still raining this morning and quite cold. It seems the locals don’t know what is happening with their summer either.
The drive south to Sechelt was really pretty, but the coast looked uninviting with very heavy grey skies and a cold wind blowing. Didn’t feel inclined to go walking along any of the beaches.
Had heard that there was a Canada Day parade in Sechelt, but by the time we arrived it was just finishing, the town was packed to overflowing and not a car park available anywhere. Decided to continue on a bit further and ended up stopping at Davis Bay, can imagine it being a really nice area on a fine day. Enjoyed a lunch stop at a café overlooking the beach.
Returned back into Sechelt later in the afternoon and most of the crowds had gone. They had live music playing in the street and a bouncy climbing tower for the children, but there were very few people around, I think the cold weather had sent them home. Most of the shops were open so had a good leisurely look around before heading back to our “campsite” in Half Moon Bay.
We had a great evening chatting and sharing stories and wine with Pierre and Dayna and Wills and Megan….and also some grappa made by a great friend of Pierre’s father, who died last week. Pierre’s father is Italian and settled in Calgary but he and some mates bought plots of land in this area for their holiday homes. It is a 12 hour drive from Calgary. Awesome young couples.
