Wednesday July 8th – Long Lake County Park WI

We are really enjoying travelling through Wisconsin, it's rolling country, with areas in bush, small towns, and dairy farms tucked into valleys.
First stop this morning was the High Ground War Veteran Memorial Park just out of Neillsville. We were given an audio coverage to take with us as we wondered through the different areas, remembering the wars that Americans had been involved with. There was even a card in memory of a soldier killed in Afghanistan at the end of June. Surprised when we saw a globe showing those involved…and NZ wasn’t showing. We did mention it to the man in charge!
Onto Augusta, where there is a small Amish community, and stopped at a small market and bought some fresh beans, courgettes and little potatoes. Nice to have a change from supermarket vegetables.
Just along the road we spotted Chicago Bob’s Gun Shop. What a find. Lots of antique rifles, shot guns and pistols and other antiques. But Bob was a real character..covered in tattoos, including bullet holes in the head, stitches from the corner of an eye, eyes tattooed on eyelids and a tail of a snake sticking out of one ear and the head out the other!
Spent quite a time chatting with him, and hearing about his travels in Mexico where he spends 3 months of the year.
Just out of town stopped at an old mill for a lunch break. Intended to look through it, but when we found we had to have a guided tour that lasted an hour, and the guide was quite antique himself, passed on it.
Passed through the towns of Chippewa Falls and Bloomer, where we were told about this campsite. This year we have found a number of County campgrounds which are just what we want. They have power but no other facilities and are so much cheaper than the privately owned grounds.
Enjoyed the Amish potatoes in a salad with fresh beans and steak for tea tonight..living like kings.
