Sunday July 5th – Pulpit Rock Campground, Decorah, IA

Set off this morning with Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” playing through the iPod, on what is really the start of the travelling. And as the American’s would say, “It has been a real pretty day”! Blue skies, puffs of clouds, temperatures in the 80’s and average humidity. Couldn’t be better...and my head cold is much improved.

Destination today was Decorah, about 180 miles away, a town that was recommended to us by Laura, who spent 5 days with us in NZ in February, and is from nearby Minnesota.. looking forward to catching up with her soon.

Went east to Clarion, then north to Clear Lake. This part of the trip was much the same as yesterday with miles of corn and soya bean, and long straight roads.

Clear Lake is like a resort town, the fairground was in operation beside the lake, with all the rides imagineable, and the lake was wall to wall boats..Ian was glad they he didn’t have to drive on it…hard to find a clear space. Stopped in a State Park beside the lake for a lunch break.

The afternoons drive changed quite a bit…more undulating, with bends in the roads, and starting to see dairy units. This is a very nice part of the country.

Arrived in Decorah, and very impressed. As it’s Sunday everything was shut, but we walked the main street and stretched our legs. Look forward to exploring more tomorrow. Staying at a great municipal campground just out of town.
