Wednesday June 14, Gargas

It was a leisurely start this morning, so enjoyed sitting outside eating breakfast and the time disappeared. Have found that with all the clothes we brought with us, nothing prepared us for the heat we are getting now. So stopped in at Pertuis where there was a large area of stores with plenty of parking. Managed to pick up a few cooler things, and with the temperatures the hand washing that I hang out in the late afternoon is dry before we go to bed.
Continued along the D973 with a lunch stop under some trees, by the now the temps were well over 30 degrees. Needed to empty our wastes as the French Passion sites usually don’t have any facilities. Went to Puyvert where I had found an Aire, and we did the vans “ablutions”. Passing through the really nice town of Lourmarin we found a parking area with space for Ruakiwi. Went for a walk through this town, just delightful with its narrow lanes edged with many cafes and boutiques and intriguing arty shops. It was nicely shaded helping with the 35 degree heat. The perfume from the flowers on the large trees lining the road was exquisite – not sure what the trees are. The chateau on the edge of town hosts many exhibitions, at the moment the work of a Chilean etching artist is on display and I spent quite a bit of time chatting with an English guy who was looking after it. He lives in a nearby village for part of the year, and has a house in Chile for the rest of the year. He had been instrumental in bringing the exhibition to the Chateau. And it was a pleasure to visit it as the Chateau was very cool inside.
These old pots were for sale at €5 each.

Love to know what these trees are, such heady perfume.
The drive up the D943 tested the lads driving ability, it climbed up and over the Luberon Mountains with rather narrow roads and a number of hairpin bends, but he managed admirably. I had located another French Passion site in  Gargas, near Apt and once again we have landed on our feet. Higher up with views looking over the valley and a breeze as well. Went to a tasting and they had a really nice dry Rose. Sitting here tonight writing this in the shade of the almond trees and the breeze really cooling us down nicely. Another great day in Provence.
Oh yes...perfect for a summer evening!

Yes Sarah, can imagine how much we enjoy these little breaks in the country after some "interesting" city driving!
