The aqueduct over the Orb River in Beziers

Back on the road again this morning and after a very gray and drizzly day yesterday, we had blue skies. We had a two hour drive to Beziers, which initially took us through some rather underwhelming towns but once we dropped down over the range we reached the Languedoc region covered in grape vines. Such a contrast to where we have been.

We were keen to see the Canal du Midi in Beziers and found a place to park nearby and walked along the Orb River then climbed up some steps to the aqueduct that took the canal over the river and followed it along to a small port. But very little happening and guess we are at the end of the season with very few people still boating. The water in the canal didn’t look that inviting. Ended up calling into a small café beside the canal and sharing a rather nice pizza for lunch.

Continued onto Pézenas stopping at a supermarket on the way to pick up some supplies. Found our accommodation at the edge of this really historic town, with free parking outside. This little studio flat is on the ground floor and is full of character, really quaint. Put our feet up for a few hours before walking into town for dinner, and didn’t have to go far.

Found a nice looking restaurant with outside seating and what a great call. Run by a husband and wife using local produce. Joanna was delightful and had been to NZ about 12 years ago when she worked on a cruise ship. And we ended up having probably one of the best meals in France, I had a mixture of shell fish with local vegetables in a great sauce and Ian had monkfish wrapped in bacon with squid ink flavoured rice. And finished it off with a vodka flavoured tiramisu with a touch of lime and lemon. Just superb. It was such a balmy evening to wander our way home. Looking forward to having a good look around town tomorrow although some light rain is predicted.

Drive by on route to Beziers.

Looked a bit like rain for awhile but it soon
cleared to blue skies.

Loved this old house.

The cathedral dominates the town.

The church all lit up, may be pink
for breast cancer month?

A wonderful evening.

..and a dessert to finish with!

A long and interesting day Meg.
You may remember meeting our organist friend Chris Hainsworth. He is organist at Beziers Cathedral and he and his wife live in a village called Puisserguier , a few miles outside Beziers.
