Wednesday September 21, Vaison la Romaine

Finally we managed to catch up...not a good selfie
as almost cut Ian out!!!

After a good sleep, we chatted to Ian (my brother) and worked out a good plan of the best way to get to the hotel. After breakfast I walked into town to the Orange Network shop as I needed to organise a Sim card for France. They were extremely helpful and in no time at all I have a card giving me oodles of data for the month at €40. It was good to get that organised.

We set off from town just before 11 and finally felt as though we were on holiday again as we drove through the vines and lavender fields under clear blue skies. The last few weeks have been pretty challenging and it is good to be able to relax again. Ian arranged to meet us where he had parked his car, and it was just wonderful to finally catch up with him and Sue, it has been nine years since we have been together. They hopped into the car with us, and guided us up some really narrow steep roads to where we could park to unload our bags. As we couldn’t get into our room until 4, we left our bags in their room then parked the car.

We are staying in the Medieval City of Vaison la Romaine, an ancient walled hilltop town with narrow cobbled streets winding through the stone walled buildings. The “new town” is where most of the shops and cafes are and we crossed an old roman bridge across the Ouveze River to get to it. We meandered through the streets and stopped for lunch and the chatting just continued. So much to catch up on.

Back to the hotel by 4 and settled into our room which has a beamed ceiling and huge old prints covering the walls. There is so much character here. Out again this evening for a meal and wandering home through these old streets with the glow of the street lights was really something special. What a day it has been.

Leaving Orange for Vaison la Romaine, it really
felt so good to be tourists again!

Great to catch up with your travels from UK to here - wonderful to be with your brother and wife after so many years. Loving your medieval village, a photographers paradise, plenty of fodder for you and your camera. We spent (only) a day wandering around a medieval hilltop village not too far from Nice....of course that was film days. My memories are still vivid of those quaint alleys and buildings.
