August 2, Fredrikstad

A beautifully restored boat in Fredrikstad

We joined Toril and Trond for breakfast this morning and sat chatting over coffee before finally saying a sad farewell, they have given us such a warm welcome which we have really appreciated. Back on the road to Horton where we caught the ferry across the fjord to Moss, a very pleasant 30 minute trip. The sky was starting to look ominous and the forecast was for rain coming in, thankfully yesterday the weather was so good for our time in Tonsberg.

Stopped for a few supplies then onto Fredrikstad where we had found a parking area down on the Glooma River just opposite the Old Town. After a late lunch, there were some spits of rain but we decided to put our coats on and visit the Old Town. Fredrikstadt has a great system of free ferries with one that continually crosses the river to the old town and back, which we took. This is an old fortress town and its buildings and cobbled streets have been preserved with lots of artists galleries and cafes, and the rain held off as we wandered the streets.

The other ferry route ran into the new town and as the rain had started, we decided to take a cruise and see what we could of this area. The centre of town was really busy and we decided to take the ferry to the end of the line and stop off on the return, but little did we know that for this particular ferry, it was the last of the day. We had to wait 40 minutes for the next ferry and by now the rain was very heavy and quite a wind blowing….and there was really no shelter and it really was at the end of the line with only a car park. We managed to find a dry spot to wait under an awning and sat it out, feeling like drowned rats and getting quite cold. So glad to see the ferry arrive and be able to travel back in the warm. The day certainly turned out differently than we expected. Very happy to get back to Ruakiwi and put some warm dry clothes on as the rain continued to fall.

Loading on the ferry to Moss

There seemed to be about 4 of these ferries,
running the route between Horten and Moss.

And the little ferry that crosses the river in Fredrikstad.
