Monday November 5 Neukirchen, and Tuesday 6 Tolkamer, Netherlands

Dinner with very special friends, Conny and Hitten

Obviously coming to the end of the holiday with combining two days!! The good news from yesterday the guys at Fischer were amazing,  Klaus worked on the van straight away and it ended up being a quick fix with the water heater, he put all the cabinets back for Ian then did a couple of other repairs and we were on our way two hours later. Having a company like Fischer’s that we know so well and trust is invaluable, and they understand our situation and work with us.
Then it was off to Conny and Hitten’s to stay the night. The builders had just started ripping out their old kitchen and removing some walls to make it open plan. Had a great day with them, and walked into the village for a traditional pork schnitzel dinner in the evening. So good, especially the green peppercorn sauce I had with mine. We had parked in the street and slept in the van, but enjoyed using their really good shower – the first “proper” one for four months!!!
Decided to have an overnight at one of our favourite spots, right on the Rhine Canal at Tolkamer. We are parked metres from the river and the boat traffic is almost non-stop.  Before we left this morning, I sat down with the map and worked out a route which would take us west of Dusseldorf before heading north beside the Netherlands border. Everything looked okay until Hitten saw the beginning of the route and it was on a motorway that no longer exists….there is now a very new one, so he decided to lead us onto the motorway we needed. All was going well until we found another new motorway system and missed the turnoff and we ended up heading to Aachen! The navigator was getting a tad stressed too, so we continued to the next exit and retraced out steps and somehow there were more issues and we were heading back to Dusseldorf! By this stage I was throwing my toys out….and Jilly out! Turned around once again and finally got onto a road that took us where we wanted to go…grrrr!
The rest of the drive went pretty well, and we passed through many beautiful German villages and countryside. After a very late lunch stop in a supermarket carpark it was onto Tolkamer and only two other campers here tonight. The weather has been surprisingly mild and sunny, with temperatures reaching 15. Pulled the chairs out and enjoyed the last of the sun before it set at 5pm. Tonight I have a casserole cooking using beef cheeks. Smelling good and hope it is as tender as what I had in a restaurant recently. Certainly the days of barbecuing have long gone! And not much in the way of photos either!

Thanks Jen. Yes the navigator was really losing the plot when the new motorway wasn’t showing up on either the GPS or Google Maps. Very frustrating!!! At least Ian kept his cool and just kept driving😜
