A foggy morning on the estuary. |
We have had a blissfully relaxed day staying put at the
campsite, so good after two days on the road. Interesting we were speaking to
some Brits today and telling them about our debacle on the motorway yesterday
with the tolls, and they laughed and said they got caught the first time they
came to Portugal. It must be a good revenue gathering system for the Portuguese!!!
The sea fog had closed in this morning making some eerie
scenes beside the estuary as the fisherman were heading off. Did chores this
morning and a whole pile of hand washing, then we got our bikes out and checked
out the neighbourhood. Rode out to the coast and on the way spotted a really
nice restaurant not far from here on the beach, perfect for lunch a bit later
on. Rode out to the point where the estuary reaches the coast, the waves were
roaring and can see why they do a lot of surfing here. Then back into the town
of Foz Do Arelho and nosed around the streets and found a little grocery store
to pick up some fresh fruit before returning to camp. Good to be back on our
bikes, but not really a long enough ride, remembering the great rides we did in
France last year, but it is not really possible here.
Unloaded our fruit and walked back to the restaurant, and
what a great find. It was so relaxing looking out onto the water and the food
was superb. I ordered the Bacalhau dish, so many people said I must try this
traditional Portuguese food which is salted dried cod. I understand that it is
soaked in several changes of water to rehydrate. Today the dish was baked with the
fish, potatoes, onions and a green that looked like spinach with a crunchy
topping. There are many ways to serve Bacalhau but I really enjoyed this dish.
Ian also enjoyed his Sea Bass.
All followed by a very lazy afternoon enjoying the warm sun.
Biked back along to the coast late in the afternoon for some photos….and a
chance for a bit more biking!! Just perfect.
