Saturday September 8, Foz

Excellent motorway

It was time to leave this wonderful spot as there are no facilities to empty and fill with fresh water. We were feeling a bit brighter, although still coughing and sneezing. Had heard about a really nice spot overlooking the estuary at Foz and Jilly could tell us we would be there in less than 2 hours. Negotiated the road out from camp without any mishaps and wound through some small coastal roads before taking the A8 motorway from Aviles exiting just before Foz.
There was very little traffic and such a great road with lots of tunnels through the hills and bridges over gullies, some great engineering. This northern coast gets a lot of rain and countryside is really green, lots of fields of maize and everywhere plantations of eucalypts. And thanks to Vicki, have found that this is a recently new business in Spain and many people are not happy about them taking over their farmland.
Wound down into the small coastal town of Foz and found the large grassed area set aside for campers, just metres from the estuary with the town nearby. There are all the facilities for emptying and filling and it is all free. We really appreciate these sort of places…as do many others, by the end of the day there were almost 50 campers parked up!
Settled in and walked into the town for a little look around before stopping off at a tapas bar. Sampled some great tapas, our waitress didn’t speak English but found a list in English which was a big help, and some very good Spanish wine (for medicinal purposes!).
We were both feeling very heady with our colds (and not from the wine!) and came back for a wee siesta. Woke up to quite a bit of noise and very surprised to see the bay in front full of kayaks. Eventually realised that there was a race and watched as they headed off around the far point before reappearing and paddling right around the bay and returning directly in front of us to the finish line. There must have been over 200 kayaks competing, singles, doubles and a number where the paddlers kneel and use a paddle. The winner arrived back in about half and hour, but they were still finishing an hour later. We enjoyed sitting out and watching them all come past.
Both of us are still coughing and spluttering, this summer cold is not going away in a hurry.
Beautiful beaches along the coast.
