Just knew I needed this chaps photo..what a wonderful face. He worked at the sawmill museum, spoke great English and was quite a delight. |
Now I know why they call Namsos
the “Rock City”…. Last night the wind really got up and did we Rock!! At one
stage I woke Ian and asked if we should shift…but the sleepy reply was “of
course not”! It was an interesting start to the night too, we had only just gone
to bed when we heard a loud bang and a crash just outside our van…initially I
thought someone had hit us. Turned the lights out and peered through a crack in
the blind and could see that the light post not far from us had just been hit
by a car and the lamp had smashed to the ground. The car drove across the
parking area, stopped and then someone ran off. Soon another person came out
with a big container and collected all the broken material and then all was
quiet for the rest of the night ..apart from the wind!
The wind had dropped quite a
bit this morning and only odd skiffs of rain so went for a walk around the town
centre. Ian found a good sports and outdoor store so left him to it and I
meandered around a big shopping mall and window shopped.
Next stop was the Norwegian
Sawmill Museum just out of town, and something Ian was very keen to see…and even
I enjoyed wandering around too. It was housed in one of the largest wooden
buildings in Norway and all the machinery dating back to the 1800’s was still
in working order. Although not operating today, they still have open working
days. Evidently they don’t have get a lot of tourists as it has limited appeal
to most people.
With the forecast (if it can be
trusted) showing some fine weather starting tomorrow we decided to head once
more for the coast. It wasn’t long before the rain came in again, and it really
poured, along with more strong wind. And as we have said so often on this trip….this
would have looked magnificent if the sun was shining. We followed a river out
to the coast and it was fair roaring with all the rain, and there were
waterfalls gushing out of the rocks everywhere. We started to wonder about our
choice of direction.
Arrived at the small town of
Osen and called into the local co-op for a few things. Chatted with a lady and
she suggested camping a little bit further out to the coast in a popular spot
beside a bridge, and she did say the wind was dying down tonight and we were in
for some fine weather! The rain had stopped but the closer we got to the coast
the stronger the wind got, thinking maybe we should turn around when we saw the
little road leading down to quite a large area beside the bridge and it was
completely sheltered from the wind. Perfect, it was 4pm and decided to call it
quits for the day. We went for a walk out to the bridge and the wind was so
strong we could hardly stand up, tomorrow the weather WILL be better.
