Tuesday September 6 - Holm to Namsos…and more rain!
As we were standing at the marina at Terrak, the sun shone briefly on the rocks and a rainbow appeared! Then the rain came and I ran. |
A few skiffy showers overnight
and this morning but it is quite mild. Bumped our way down the track to the
road from a particularly nice campsite, helped no doubt but the sunny
weather.
Had our closest call on the
road so far this morning as we drove through a tunnel. Had noticed a truck and
trailer on the other side of the tunnel as we went in, so we were expecting
him….but obviously he wasn’t expecting us. He was in the middle of the tunnel
on a bend, his brakes locked up when he saw us, his tyres screeched, and we
waited for the bang as Ian hugged the wall of the tunnel. Whew, we made it, and
I think I shut my eyes. Felt a bit shaky for a while.
Apart from that, it was a
really nice drive meandering through the fjords. Saw a waterfall and got Ian to
turn around. We hiked up the road to check it out, quite nice but not overly
spectacular.
Yesterday the girl in the
information centre had told us about a very new boat building museum in a small
town of Terrak, just off the main highway, so we thought we would check it out.
But sadly it was shut although could see through the big windows the boat that
was being built. The style of boat is called a Bindal, named after the region.
But it was an interesting little town and we had a wander around.
Back on the road south and left
the fjords behind as we passed through a fairly ordinary valley with a lot of
farming. The rain really started pouring down, checked my Norway weather app
(which someone had suggested) and see we are in for a another wet one tomorrow,
but then looks like we have no rain for a week..wahoo!.
Headed for the town of Namsos,
on the coast. It is also known as the Rock City, for Pop and rock music, but haven’t
really figured out what that is all about. As we entered the centre of town
there was a sign showing we were entering an automatic toll area…flash and our
number plate was noted and guess we will be charged later! Not sure why.
It was late in the afternoon,
pouring with rain and the only campground near the airport and out of town
didn’t look very inviting, so mooched around and found a parking area behind a
garage right beside the harbour. There were no signs of how long you could
park, and there were lots of empty places. We double checked with the garage
and they said it was fine….so another rather nice spot, overlooking the water,
although in the middle of a town.. and free! Somehow finding a good overnight
spot that is either free or cheap becomes a bit of a fun challenge on our
travels. Just worked out that of the 29 days on the road, we have had 14 nights
free and many of the paid ones have been quite cheap. Hard to work out the
average when it is in different currencies…maybe a job for a wet afternoon!
Had a great chat with my
brother in Atlanta tonight for his birthday…happy birthday Ian, just about
another big one!
A good walk to the waterfall |
..and a few colourful mushrooms. |
The lovely pink flowers on the road side are just about finished and their white seed heads are floating everywhere. |
Playing with double exposures at our lunch stop!! Lynn C, you inspired me this morning! |
This tunnel finished at a bridge. |
Tonight's view from our campsite...best "seat" in the house with views across the harbour. The rain stopped and the sun came out briefly. Now the wind has got up and we are rocking a little! |
..and another view at 9pm from just outside. |

And Jen, no worry about sea sickness on these short ferry crossings, and the seas have been very flat!
