Sunday August 28 Elvens to Sortland (On the Vesterlen Islands, Norway)

Tonight's view

What a day of contrasts we have had, it rained off and on all night and only 7 degrees when we woke. Such a great camping spot though. The showers continued and it was very grey, but decided we would continue on exploring this area of the Oksenes. Continued north to Myre where there is a sizeable port, and base for the SAR boats, with one just arriving in as we go there. All shops are shut on Sundays except for garages, so the towns are very quiet.
The showers continued off and on, and no sign of any sun. We just meandered around the roads doing a loop of this peninsula before ducking off west. We passed through some fabulous fjords, still am in awe of the huge rocky peaks seeming to go straight up from the water. The temperature dropped to 6 degrees as we climbed up a pass and through a 2 km tunnel to the other side where it opened up to more farmland and less grand scenery. We got to a whopping 9 degrees! Then the weather lightened and the sun started peaking through, and finally the afternoon was glorious.
We have two 11kg gas bottles which we own and they are just exchanged for full ones. This morning we ran out of the first one, so changed onto the second bottle. Spotted exchange bottles at the Esso service station in Myre, but discovered they all had a different connection, which means that Norway bottles aren’t going to fit unless we get an adapter, and then will they accept our European bottles as exchanges. The lady in the garage was very helpful, and suggested we try at the Esso in Sortland. But no luck there finding adapters. Whoops, think we may have a wee problem. Spotted a caravan and motorhome sales place this afternoon, so decided to stay the night here and go and see if they can help out tomorrow morning, or at least suggest a solution. We do need to get it sorted as we still have a long time in Norway and this gas bottle won’t last very long.
Looking around for a camping spot and saw a small marina on a point, not far from the South Eastern side of the bridge, looked perfect, the sun was pouring in and noticed that in fact it was a “legit” camping spot (they had the notice in Norwegian and English!) so we put 100NOK (NZ$15) in an envelope and popped it in the box. Beats staying in a campground, the sun is pouring in and we are surrounded by the sea.
After a cuppa we went for a good walk along the beach and towards town, so nice to be out in the warm fresh air. We bought a decent size salmon tail yesterday for 49 NOK (NZ$8), all packed in a tinfoil dish and cut into 4 big pieces, Ian cooked it in the tinfoil on the barbecue tonight and it was so good, along with a salad and a glass of French wine, living like kings!

Saw this at the garage in Myre, so spent 30NOK and emptied the cassette!

Lots of exchange gas bottles, but not one that would fit our adapter
Pretty grey and gloomy at the port of Myre

Such beautiful scenery

This little shelter at a rest spot had a grass roof...they must add so much weight.

A happy Ruakiwi, parked in the sun
