Sunday August 14 Glucksburg – Felnsburg – Langballingholz
Kite surfing in front of our campsite |
Didn’t go far today! We wanted to pick up some wine to
take to Scandinavia with us, everyone has warned us on how expensive it is and
suggested we stock the van up. But shops do not open in Germany on Sunday’s
except for restaurants and cafes, but we were told that the supermarket in
Glucksburg was the only one open in the area. We arrived about 10.30 only to
find that it didn’t open until 11.
While we waited we got chatting to a wonderful couple
from Flensburg, Hans and ???(Chirstiana I think). They were able to pass on so
much great advice, we were very grateful. Hans even came into the supermarket
with us to explain the different wines and their qualities, as have bought a
few that have not been so good, hopefully now we will manage better.
Then on into Flensburg, and got good parking right in the
centre of town. It’s a really historic fishing port, with old buildings painted
in interesting colours, and bustling with life on a Sunday afternoon.
Decided to have our main meal in town today, and there
were so many choices. Ended up in a traditional restaurant and the waitress
spoke good English and explained the menu, although I had been using Google
Translate on my phone to work it out a little. Decided on the fish, which was a
good choice, salmon and a white fish done in a mustard and dill sauce. Really
yummy. It had been raining but by the
time we were finished the sun was out so we really enjoyed wandering around the
harbour and with so many wooden boats, you could imagine his nibs in his
element. We went through an area where they were restoring old boats, there
were slabs of wood stacked up to dry, and all the associated tools. Very
interesting. Decided against the maritime museum though as there was no English
translation available.
Hans, who also has a caravan had mentioned a great spot
to overnight about 20 minutes out of town beside the water, and what a good
call. There was a large campground with all the facilities, but we were able to
park on a grass strip overlooking the water for 10 Euro, no electricity or
facilities but that was no problem.
Nearby was a marina that was humming with life as people
were out and about enjoying their sunny Sunday afternoon. There were bars,
cafes and food stalls and a big playground for the children. We enjoyed meandering
around, checking everything out. Back to Ruakiwi for a light meal of salami,
cheese and gherkins.
The temperatures are certainly a little cooler, but guess
we are on the same latitude as Scotland now. Happy to have my vest on today,
although his nibs, as always had his shorts and T.
