Saturday August 20th, Grasfnas – Vamhurs

Early morning fog around the ruins.

Woke this morning to a fog and managed to get a few shots in before it cleared to a really lovely warm day. We were on the road soon after 8 as we knew we needed to get some miles on the clock,  heading north if we are to make the Lofoten Islands. Hard at times to bypass towns that look really nice, but coming south once it gets cooler, we will have plenty of time to nose around these places.
Did a stop at Lidl in Trollhattan to top up on non perishables, along with a couple of Danish pastries…a bit of a treat! It really is interesting shopping for food in a foreign country, you have to rely on the pictures on the packets to know what you are buying, along with a little help from Google Translate on the phone. Then we just continued north on the E45 with a few breaks to stretch our legs and have some lunch.
The scenery changed so much, initially through really good farmland, large areas of crops, many being harvested and huge beautifully styled barns for housing animals with immaculate houses and grounds. There were a few dairy cows out on pasture and saw lots of “Secure Covers” covering the silage bunkers and never saw a tyre being used. Craig you would be impressed, just need to educate NZ farmers!
There are so many lakes, some very big, Taupo size and others really quite small. Then it was through a lot of forest land, areas have been harvested, and think they were mainly beech and fir (for your info Ed!). Quite a few papermills in towns that reminded us very much of Tokoroa. And lots of rocks and quite marshy areas, really similar to parts of Alaska.
We were going to stop the night in Mora, but the town was overflowing with people as a huge ultra marathon had just finished, so continued onto to this very small campground on the shores of Lake Orasjon. A really beautiful place with a camping spot just metres from the lake. Not a breath of wind and the lake was like a mirror tonight.
Not many photos as the windscreen was splattered with many small bugs, Ian had cleaned it this morning but in no time at all it was pretty grotty.
Very pretty misty trees this morning

This is for Ian - he loves seeing this machinery working

A late morning coffee at a marina just out of Mellerud

Lake Orasjon, our evening camping spot.

A perfect campspot

So glad that you are enjoying our life on the road....and Alaska, so many memories of our trip there in 2010 in Ruakiwi the 1st when we droved from Montana up to Prudhoe Bay and back down to Washington State over 4 months. Loved every minute of it, check out the 2010 archives on this blog.
So it's all my fault, and as we would say in NZ...Yeah Right!

Meg,
Didn't realise you were headed so far north. When you get to Bodo, have a lager for me on the wharf for old times sake--last there in June 1965.
