Friday August 19th, Varberg to Grafsnas Castle Ruins

Castle Ruins
Had thoughts of crossing the harbour in a small ferry boat this morning to see the castle, but decided that we would continue north, although did have a slight detour. A chap at the camp told us we needed to go to Gekas at Ullared, a real experience and we could get anything we want for the cheapest prices in Sweden. Checked out the website and it looked like Walmart on steroids! So a 40 minute detour and we arrived…and we were blown away. We parked in the campervan carpark, along with almost 100 others, and the huge carparks were pretty full as well. Luckily we followed some Swedish people in, went down a lift and then followed the crowds to the biggest trolley stand I have ever seen. Got a trolley and we just kept following, could not believe the crowds and the prices were really cheap. Ian bought a fishing rod along with a few lures (he is hoping to keep us fed in Norway) and I picked up a pair of jeans and a top, dirt cheap. Stopped at their salad café, so good with a smorgasbord of salads, meatballs, shrimps and chicken. We filled a dish and were charged by the weight, which was really reasonable. Then we hit the supermarket part and added some meat and bits and pieces. A lot of fun and some good bargains.

Then back on our road north, through Boras. Great roads, not very busy and passing through such a variety of scenery, from mirror like lakes, beech and fir forests and open farm land with really tidy farm buildings. A lot of harvesting is going on.
Checked on the map and noticed an historic symbol with Grafsnas slottruins – translated via Google Translate as Castle Ruins. Knew that there would be a carpark and many people park in castle carparks overnight, so at 5pm we arrived, and really have fallen on our feet…again!
We are on the edge of Lake Anton and parked near a boat ramp with one other camper. It’s a very mild evening and we took a walk around the huge parklike grounds and checked out the castle ruins, which have had quite a lot of reconstruction, but do like pretty impressive. It is obviously a popular place as only about an hour from Gothenburg and people are walking around, having picnics in the grounds and generally enjoying the weather.
Tonight we had a fillet of NZ marinated lamb which we had bought at Lidl in Germany for less than NZ$10….Ian cooked it on the barbecue and it was superb.

Have just found out about this blog and have loved reading the bits that I have seen so far. Looking forward to meeting up with you again at the beginning of December if you can both make the reunion back at Onewhero - and if you can keep your feet on the ground after such a magical journey.
