Thursday Sept 12, Virginia City RV Camp , Nevada

Saloon Virginia City

This morning we took Route 89 South, through a lot of forest land and our first stop was in the small town of Greenville, a town which is struggling to survive. Stopped at a small antique store in an old house, and ended up having a long chat with Suzanne who works the store, and found out a lot about the town and also some of the neighbouring areas, really good local knowledge. Her dog put on quite and amazing performance for us, quite the circus animal!

Next stop Quincy, the main city of the region, which had an old main street with well preserved stores. Coffee and the best every apple cinnamon roll (only one…we shared!) and a chat with the owner, then on through more forestland to Portola.
The countryside opened up to a large area of irrigated land with cattle and hay land, enjoyed the change from the forests we had been in for the past few days.  Before long we were into Nevada and much more arid lands with rocky hills.
We were heading for Virginia City so had to take Route 395, a freeway which ran right through the centre of Reno. These really are not the sort of roads we enjoy, traffic travelling at 65mph and knowing exactly where they are going while we are carefully following the directions of Jilly, the GPS and trying to stay in the right lane…but we made it. Reno is a large sprawling city in a huge desert basin, but we were soon on a steeply climbing minor road up and over the pass to Viriginia City, we rose from 5000 feet about sea level to 6800 in a very short distance, the views were amazing.

Parked Ruakiwi in the only RV camp in town, a great spot within walking distance of the boardwalks and old shops of the town. It was late in the afternoon so headed into town and decided that as we were in Virginia City we needed to try out some of the bars. Most enjoyable but sadly the oldies only managed 3 bars and a pizza before heading back to the van. I had taken my small camera and was so disappointed as there were views for miles and the colours on the distant hills as the sun set were just amazing….it was too far to walk back for the big camera…..I never learn!

Howdy Meg and Ian, delightful stories and photos, plenty on towns in the USA for which the initial reason for being has changed, like our Barryvilles, Muruparas, Reeftons which are generally not so well kept. At home at 12-15pm Sat, bags packed, floor vacumed and waiting for friends who are taking us to the airport.
Travel safe, shortly be able to swap pictures with you. Love Vicki n Ed.
