Saturday Sep 7, Shoreline RV Park, Crescent City, CA
Pat and Del with their 2013 Born Free RV |
Another
sunny warm day, with temps in the lower 20’s, just perfect for cruising. Sitting
having breakfast noticed whales breaching out in the bay, not close enough for
photos, but got quite a thrill as this was the first whale siting in our
travels. Before leaving we called into the stunning Hawthorne Gallery, which
features some wonderful art and jewellery, this is certainly not your normal
small town gallery but I guess the location overlooking the ocean on this main
coastal route makes it a good position.
Griff's where we had dinner last night. |
The trip
south followed the rugged coast line, dotted with small coves and rocky
outcrops. A really spectacular drive. We stopped at Brookings and fuelled up at
$3.66/gallon, before we crossed the border, California prices are over $4.00/Gallon.
Pulled into
the marina for a lunch stop, and saw another Born Free motorhome pulling in,
they had seen us first. Pat and Del had
brought their new RV in Florida at the
beginning of the year and during the past two months as they travelled to the North West, we were the
first Born Free they had seen. Just love how unique our vehicles are and
whenever we have seen one, we have stopped and had a good chat. It was great to
see inside a new one, there have been a number of good changes but the layout
and most of the joinery is exactly the same.
On our last
trip we crossed briefly in California before heading north, and were stopped at
the border and our fruit was taken, so were half expecting a check this
afternoon as we crossed the border but just drove straight on through.
Stopped at
the information centre in Crescent City to get some California maps and information, this
coastal town was hit by a tsunami after the 1964 Alaskan Earthquake which
destroyed the commercial district. We found a great campground right on the
edge of the harbour. The tide was going out and I had a wonderful time paddling
around on the sandy flats stalking firstly some little birds which I think are
plovers, and then an egret, which was wary of me but I managed to get
reasonably close. May well have the names wrong here, appreciate any
suggestions!
