Monday September 9, Sacremento River RV Park, Redding CA

A huge forest fire had just started West of Redding
First job this morning was to visit the local garage, real nice chap and he felt that everything was probably okay with the front brake, but suggested a Napa garage in Redding where they could check it out to make sure and for peace of mind. So decided to drive the 100 miles East. Before we left town, we called into the Forest Ranger Station and paid $10 for a “lifetime” senior access parks which gives us half price for all National Parks and Forest Parks, sometimes being older has its advantages.
Driving East on 299 the road followed Trinity River for quite some time, and the scenery was superb. It is evidently a great fishing river, and with lots of pools and riffles it certainly looked it. The hills were dotted with trees and vegetation but this is a really dry area, and as the morning continued the temperatures began to rise again.

Inside the quaint old Weaverville Hotel

We came across the small town of Weaverville, which was a real surprise in the middle of all the wildnerness. It is an historic town, having been settled in the 1850’s with the gold rush, but it is a real thriving place with some great little antique stores and galleries. Enjoyed wandering the streets and poking around.
Stopped for a lunch break at Whiskeytown Lake, and found a tree to park under as the temperatures were rising towards 40 degrees. It was a hot drive into Redding and had given up on the open windows and used the air con. The chap at the garage we had been sent to was great, and he was pretty sure that everything was okay but he felt for peace of mind it was worth checking out. He couldn’t fit us in until the morning so found a great campsite only a few miles away beside the Sacremento River. It was mid afternoon by this stage with temperatures over 40 so decided to plug into power and turn on the air-conditioning and have a lazy afternoon. This would have to be one of the nicest camps we have come across, even has a swimming pool which was spotless and extremely inviting. Have just had a great swim and may well have another one before dinner! Bliss.

Howdy Meg and Ian, youre not older, must have just sent Ian in to buy the pass. Treat the fires with lots of respect, camping surrounded by trees and scrub not a good idea, those things can move fast and are often started by lightning. Farmers know when breeding season is, end of summer, early autumn for stock, after a bottle of Chardonay for those who live in the house. All good in Rotorua, Vicki organising wardrobe, suitcase already half full. Travel safe, Love Ed.
