Sunday September 29, Elk Flat State Park, Ely, Nevada

Today has been all about the clouds, I just love clouds. It was very grey when we woke this morning, but by the time we set off East there was some light amongst the clouds which were like I had never seen before and with the vast landscape…I couldn’t stop taking photos!
By midday we were in Eureka, an old mining town with a so called population of 600. We walked the main street and it really was a town that time had forgotten, most of the stores were empty or For Sale. Continued on Route 50 to Ely, a copper mining town, and the town reflects this. Lots of bars, casinos and empty shops. Everything has a dusty look to it, and being a Sunday afternoon it probably gave it a more desolate look. It is a town that really is isolated, most of the main towns like Las Vegas, Reno and Salt Lake City are 300 to 400 miles away.  Although did find a really good sports store and bought a pair of walking shoes, now that autumn is here the sandals aren’t quite right!
Loved the sign in the Council Building, Eureka...No Guns Allowed!
Time is catching up in Eureka
A use for old horseshoes

The Picture Theatre in Ely.

It was time for the laundry and found one of the best I have been in, really clean and with modern washers and dryers. It was all washed and dried and back in the cupboard in less than an hour.
Camp tonight is in a really nice State Park about 10 miles from town overlooking the hills, we lit a campfire and sat and watched a great sunset, those clouds once again looked amazing.

The Aspens are starting to colour up, hopefully will see more of them.

Hi Meg,
Amazing clouds,colour and countryside.
Had to wonder what sort of meat was in the shop behind the horseshoe bench!
You've seen some amazing country and I wonder if elk are going to be seen where you are now.
Happy travels,
Jen
