Saturday September 3, Chinook

A bit of a slow start this morning, and only did a few bits and pieces. Chatted with other campers and Mitch arrived with some vacuumed packed smoked salmon for us. We won’t want to leave!

Needed a few things so decided to wander over the 4 mile bridge across the Columbia to Astoria and have a look around. The weather is really hot today, although not like out east, can cope with this heat, more like a wonderful NZ summers day.

Drove right out to the state park where the Columbia meets the Pacific, amazing views. Will be on the other side of the ocean in less than 10 days! Meandered around the roads and followed the river back into town.

Astoria was established 200 years ago and has some wonderful old buildings. It was established 200 years ago and was a major seaport with the river servicing towns so far inland. Wound up to the high point in town to the Astoria Column which was built in 1926. It was decorated with a frieze of 22 significant events that occurred in the region. 15 years ago it was restored and brought back to its former glory, truly amazing. I didn’t bother climbing the 150 odd steps to the top…..just too many people up there…..nothing to do with the fact that it would have been quite a climb!

Back in time to join the other campers for drinks…..its a tough life! Better make the most of it though, back to routine before long!

…Later. There appeared to be smoke haze in the sky and just before sunset the sky turned orange as the sun dropped lower, what an amazing light for photography!
