Wednesday July 6, Ashcroft, BC

Wow….temperatures have soared today, got to 34 degrees! - Such a change after needing another pair of jeans at the start of the trip, now it is singlets!

So enjoyed our stay at the Provincial Park at Nairn Falls on Green River, it was just so peaceful. Sort of sad to leave there this morning.

Nearby Pemberton is a ski town with lots of apartments and hotels, with the mountains all around it has a good feel.

Took the road to Liloeet, initially passing through the valley and enjoyed seeing cropping and some livestock, before it wound very steeply up into the mountains. Absolutely stunning drive. Near the top we stopped at a Park where there were a number of trails into some alpine lakes, we took the very short 5 minute trek into the first lake through the forest and the snow was still lying on the ground. Met Pat from Taupo who was staying with her friend Jan in Pemberton and they were heading off on a much longer hike. Enjoyed meeting them both.

The road continued through the mountains beside small rivers, and there were a number of small free campgrounds dotted through the area, they looked delightful but too early in the day to stop for the night although had a lunch stop at one of them. Saw another bear grazing the fresh green grass on the side of the road but no place to stop for photos.

The mountains became less forested and more rocky, and the temperatures started to rise. Liloeet is a really hot and dry town and has a large native population, it was sad to see some young ones walking through town drinking and staggering.

By the time we got to the next town of Cache Creek there was more grazing land, although the temps were still high and the hillsides were drying off. Ended up just off the highway in the old town of Ashcroft and camping beside the Thompson River. We are sitting outside under a tree with a cold beer and a nice breeze which is cooling us down a little. Have just realised that we are camped between two major trans Canada Railway Lines, the one behind us is owned by CPR and the one over the river belongs to CNR, and already there has been quite a bit of movement….could be an interesting night!

Also heard that Ashcroft has the hottest temperature in British Columbia today and also yesterday…no wonder we are feeling the heat.
