Tuesday July 5, Pemberton

A sad and sobering start to the day with an email from Pam, a San Francisco friend we had made in Alaska last year. Her and husband Gary were travelling around Alaska on much the same routes as we were and we kept bumping into them, had lots of laughs and a few drinks along the way. Sadly Gary passed away yesterday after a short battle with cancer. We don’t know what is around the corner and makes us realise that doing what we are when we can is so important.

We were up this morning bright and early and at the glass company by 8 am, only to find that they didn’t actually have the right windscreen for our vehicle, despite telling us that they did. It would be tomorrow before they had it in! So flagged that, the screen is not too bad yet so we will continue on until we can find a place that has one in stock.

So then we had a wait until the 12.30 service appointment at Canadian Tire. Just mooched around feeling quite frustrated. All well with the brakes so felt quite excited to be back on the road again.

Retraced our steps back up through Whistler, the traffic is really busy but guess it is holiday time and the weather has finally come right. The temperatures are well up in the 20’s and the skies are blue with hardly a cloud to be seen.

Left the throngs behind and continued through some spectacular scenery of mountains and sheer rock faces to Pemberton. It was mid afternoon and we called into the Nairn Falls Provincial Park, a really beautiful spot. Drove around the campground and saw a spot overlooking the fast flowing river with a scattering of trees. Above us, a snow capped mountain. Although we had planned to drive further today, it just felt too good to leave without spending a night!

After a sit and a cold drink we took the 2km hike out to the falls, great walk and very spectacular. The cold beer was good when we got back to camp.
