Monday August 9, Yagar Lake, Alaska Highway, AK
215 Miles
We really enjoyed our stay at Klutina and would recommend the camp to anyone traveling through here, it had a real family atmosphere and the location was superb. This morning for the first time in ages we woke to a clear blue sky and it was sunny for most of the morning. Just feels so good.
It was mid afternoon when we got into Tok and it was time for “housekeeping chores”. We found a service station that offered a free car wash with a fill up, it was a high pressure hose and they had a broom and a bucket so we set too and Ruakiwi looks so much better. Then off to the Laundromat for a catch up and finally a stock up at the supermarket in town before heading south. We are back on the Alaskan Highway covering a section that we missed on our way up when we detoured through Dawson City and over the Top of the World Highway. We heard that a few weeks ago after heavy rain in the area of Chicken the road got washed out and it is still not open, spoke to people today who had to do a 600 mile detour because of it.
We are camped tonight in a little campground beside a small lake, and there is no charge. It only takes smaller vehicles so there are a number of tents and small campers. It has a very friendly relaxed atmosphere.
And finally tonight I saw a glorious sunset, the first on the trip. As it is now about 6 weeks since the summer solstice and we also are traveling further south, the days are drawing in really quickly.
It is almost 4 weeks since we were in Fairbanks and during that time we have been traveling through some amazing country with lots of towns as well as highly populated areas, and lots of tourists. Today, we are back in the wide open space wilderness of Alaska and somehow it is kind of a nice change. The roads are far less crowded and the only town we were in was Tok (rhymes with Poke!)

Stopped at a pull out for lunch, looking out over the Wrangell Mountains. Picked a dish of wild raspberries from a patch nearby, will enjoy them for tea tonight although with all the fish in the freezer there is no room for any icecream. Will have to make do with yoghurt.
