Saturday September 12, Still at Viva’s, Pincher Creek, AB

I don’t believe what they say about Pincher Creek being the windiest city in North America…it has been so calm with beautiful clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid 20’s. Although we have been told that it is the best weekend they have had all summer!

Had a leisurely morning, getting washing done…and hanging it on the line to dry…for the first time on holiday….smells so good!

It was into Pincher Creek late morning to watch the High School Rodeo champs for Southern Alberta. We were completely enthralled watching the skills these kids had with their horses, their lasso’s and they way they handled animals. There was barrel racing, calf tying, steer wrestling, bull riding (that was amazing to see these boys in their early teens riding these big bulls that were truly bucking) and even goat tying for the girls!

They seemed to have such a mature attitude to match their skills, guess it comes from living the ranch life, growing up on horses and working with animals all their lives.

They were all riding in western saddles and were wearing the uniform…jeans, leather belts with big buckles…(and the girls had plenty of sparkly bling on theirs) long sleeved shirts and the Stetson. It was such an experience to be part of this and with Viva introducing us to everyone, we understood a bit what this community is all about.

Home late afternoon and sat on the deck with a cold beer and watched the neighbours in 2 different directions harvesting their crops. We are talking about paddocks hundreds of acres big, with 2 or 3 harvesters working at the same time, balers baling the straw and trucks picking up. The lights were going well into the night.

Neighbours joined the family for “supper” (learning not to call it tea!!!) and we had a great evening, sat around the firepit into the evening. Greg is working on a big job at the moment so unfortunately has had to work all weekend.
