Monday September 14, Many Glacier Campground, Glacier National Park, MT

The hardest part of catching up with old friends is saying goodbye, and this morning was no exception. Viva had an early appointment in Pincher Creek so in fact we waved goodbye to her, then we got organised and headed south.

The wind was blowing really hard as we passed through Waterton, maybe we were lucky to have had such great weather. Went through the border crossing without any hassles, and down to Glacier National Park.

The Rockies are just amazing, the colours of the rocks, and the different layers all make this such scenic country. We turned off at Babb and took the road to Many Glacier, into the park. Lakes and rivers are everywhere.

It was early afternoon when we got to the campground at the end of the road, had a late lunch then a wee “nana nap”. From the camp there are a number of trails. Asked around and suggested that we head up towards Grinnell Glacier, a quite substantial full day hike. So enjoy getting out in these areas, and “blowing the cobwebs” out . We walked for about an hour to Lake Josephine before turning around and heading back to camp.

We had heard from neighbouring campers that last night and again early this morning, they walked to a small lake about 1 km from camp and had seen moose as well as a bear. Had an early dinner and set off about 6.30, arrived at the lake only to find about 20 others all sitting waiting as well…the story had got around! Lots of photographers with their cameras set up on tri pods. There was a real hush and everyone was whispering. We waited…and waited and the sun went down and the only thing we saw was a deer wandering along the lake edge. The best part was the sunset, although we could hear the Elk bugleing through the valley..it’s coming up to breeding season.

Ian limped home with a very bruised heal so looks like we won’t get much more walking done in the park.
