August 21 Thursday Riviere Nouelle

I was awake at 5.30, so got up and took photos of the sunrise, and the woods with the morning colour, it was a beautiful clear still morning, the view across to the river was so special. Having a few problems with the fridge as Ruakiwi was not level, and things were defrosting, so decided to get away by 9 and try and get the food chilled again. Very sad saying goodbye to Denis and Nicole, they have done so much for us over the past 5 days. Hopefully they will be in NZ before long.
Stopped in La Malbaie, got new fuses for the RV, bought a baguette and a few bits and pieces for lunch, and pleased to see the fridge was chilling again. The drive through to La Simeon was fabulous, clear skies, with views across the river for much of the drive, and little villages all along the road. La Simeon is quite a small village, but a busy departure point for the ferry across the river, and whale watching trips.
We arrived at 11.30, in good time for the 1pm sailing, only to find that as the tide was low, and Ruakiwi was very long behind the rear well, she would not be able to load. Once again we were left behind, and had to wait for the 4.30 sailing when the tide would be much higher.
As it was such a lovely day, we wandered up into the town and had a poke around, although not really any shops, and then had a picnic lunch beside the water…with a wine and a beer! Discovered a wifi link to a nearby hotel, so caught up on the mail…and Ian had a snooze. The time passed very quickly.
A very good crossing on the ferry, only 1 ¼ hours. Met the couple parked in a motor home next to us, very interesting people, who are planning to visit NZ early next year. We chatted about suggested routes for them in NZ, and hope to see them in Rotorua.
We are heading south west for to visit Kamouraska, a small town that Nicole’s family have links with, and evidently is a must to visit, but as it was nearly 6 when we got off the ferry, decided to take the main highway west to Riviere Nouelle to the campground, and meander back tomorrow along the coastal route. Paul Grenier gave us some of his special spaghetti sauce, so as it was almost 7 before we got to camp, it was an easy meal…..and the best I have tasted. We drunk some French Bordeaux wine with it…superb.
