Monday August 18

August 18 Monday, Quebec, Wendake visit

After the wonderful weather yesterday, the day dawned a bit grey. Denis had been on the phone organizing to get a grease and oil change for Ruakiwi, so packed it up, and he and Ian set off soon after 9 to get the job done. Nicole and I had a later breakfast, and I spent the morning catching up on blogs and emails while Nicole organized an evening meal. The guys had a problem finding a place to fill with Propane, but after a few phone calls when they arrived home, Guide Rangi had Ian out on the road again to fill up.
The weather deteriorated and there was a bit of rain, so after lunch.with a wine, we put our feet up for a few hours. Guide Rangi had us on the road at 4, and off to Wendake, the native reserve where they have just built a huge hotel and museum. The weather was looking a bit grim, and no sooner were we on the road, than the heavens opened, thunder, lightning, and torrential rain. It was quite a drive, and just far too wet to see the Wendake water falls. We ran into the hotel, and the first person Denis spotted was Max, the Chief of the Wendake tribe. After a big greeting and chat with Max, he said for us to look around the new hotel (only 3 months old) and view the Indian art works that line the walls.
The Wendake Museum is adjoining the hotel, and it is in a building shaped like a tepee. Something really special, which told the story of the Wendakes and gave me a real understanding about their history. After an hour and a half, there was still thunder and lightning and rain, although not quite as heavy, for our return home.
Denis had planned for us to go to a concert in the city this evening, but the weather was against us, so had a quite evening, with a few more wines.
