Tuesday August 19

August 19 Tuesday Saint-Irenee….Camp Grenier!

A busy morning getting organised for our camping trip with Denis and Nicole. After breakfast, Denis took us shopping, Iwent to the supermarket with the shopping list, while Ian went to Future Shop to buy a new invertor, after we “cooked” the other one. We need it to charge computer, batteries and phones where we are not onto power. I managed very well, talking to people in the shop with my very limited French, but I could make myself understood. I am not as overwhelmed now by everything being in French, and can understand a few words, and translate a little.
We headed east in convoy and the first stop was at the Bassilca at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, a magnificent building, and even Ian enjoyed looking through it. It is a very popular destination for Catholics and the camping ground near by is quite full.
We stopped just near Baie-St-Paul for a picnic lunch, high in the hills overlooking the St Lawrence….it is a huge waterway, and at this eastern point is becoming salty, and tidal. Nicole had made a frittata for lunch and a salad, which we enjoyed with a beer! The weather today is much cooler with quite a breeze blowing…but no rain.
We browsed in the little village of Baie-St-Paul which is a quaint town, full of artists, and very popular with tourists. Next stop was at restored flour mill, hard to believe the power of the water wheel in turning the mill.
The countryside we have passed through is quite different, very hilly with patches of farmland, but many, many trees and many small villages.
Finally we arrived at Saint-Irenee, where D & N have a camp on their piece of land, set in the trees. What an amazing site, with pathways through the trees, a little stream running over rocks, and views right across the St Lawrence…just magic. We parked our van in a flat spot below the camp, and settled into a wonderful evening, with lamb racks and many wines…….
