Wednesday June 26, Oropa

Mountain lake...beautiful.

It’s been a great relaxing day, nice to not be driving anywhere. This morning it was only a short walk to buy our tickets for the funicular to the top of the mountain. A wonderful experience especially as it reached the first pylon on a ridge before dipping over the top to the next. Got the heart rate going seeing the cliff in front of us, but no stress. Only four of us on the trip up so able to have a good look around. It’s like a different world at the top, there are hikers who have walked up the hill that we have zipped up and others that are on their way down from higher peaks. Also quite a number of people who like us took the easy option.
Our neighbouring campers had told us about a hike to a lake that was not too strenuous, seemed a good plan and off we went. Absolutely loved the wonderful views, ice still in valleys and rocky hills towering over us. It was a good 30 minute hike for us to the lake and what a view. Such a contrast to the cities we have visited in Italy.
Sat on some rocks and enjoyed soaking in the views before heading back to the ristorante near the chairlift for a bit of lunch and a cold one! A really different world and loving soaking it up. Surprised how warm it is at this altitude, which I think is about 2000 metres.
Back down to camp and this time the gondola was full with large numbers of children, must be a school outing. The parking lots beneath us are full of buses, learning that the quiet ends once these arrive and when they leave late afternoon it returns to peace. Time for a few hours with our feet up and a relax. Not far from here are the Botanical Gardens of Oropa, sponsored by the World Wildlife of Italy which I wanted to visit. Left Ian with his feet up and I had a wonderful time meandering through the most beautiful area which showcases the plants of this Biellese Mountain area. The pathways meandered through rock gardens, wetlands, meadows and the woods. Walked down to the Basilica which is in the middle of a huge renovation project, can imagine what it must be like without scaffolding as it sits in this beautiful valley in the mountains. Spent the evening sitting outside in the cool air.

Lots of tiny wild azaleas in amongst the rocks.

Great view of Oropa from the top.

Spot the guys on the dome..they can have it!

A little play with the camera!

Love to come back in a few years to check this out!

Tonight's dinner...local sausage.
