Monday June 10, Marsala

A great cool spot for an afternoon snack.
We hopped into Salvo’s little dusty car this morning and were off for the 10 minute drive to Marsala, what an experience. Salvo swung that car around on the little narrow roads, avoiding oncoming cars, passing when they were going to slow and just about in the boot of the car in front. It really was hilarious, we just held on and arrived in one piece. He dropped us off in the middle of the town, and we didn’t really know what we would find as this isn’t a tourist town. It was really relaxing wandering along the marble paved car free areas of the centre of town and so different to other major tourist towns where it was busy trying to see all the “must do” sites. A nice breeze was blowing and the sky was a little hazy. And lots of groups of men sitting outside cafes and bars, their regular morning meeting place. The streets are wider and the buildings not as old as in some towns we have been in, although the entrance gates date back to the 1600’s. Multi storied apartment blocks are everywhere creating quite a dense city.
Enjoyed visiting the old cathedral in the centre of town, although it is not as grand as some we have been in. Headed down to the water and the fishing port hoping to find some fish markets but no luck. As we walked along the sea front the heat was rising and the clouds had burned off so were rather happy to return to the town centre and the shade. Found a nice area with a fountain and some very old trees (don’t know what the are???) just perfect to sit and enjoy a light lunch and a cold drink. Arranged for Salvo to pick us up in the afternoon and we had another sample of Italian driving.
Once again the temperatures were high in the mid afternoon so very happy to get the book out and a relax.
Entering Marsala through the old town gate.

Loved seeing all the old guys sitting around chatting,

Reading your blog this morning and wondering when a PV will make an appearance, and bingo there it is and a super one too Meg.
An interesting day, the road journey in and out sounds interesting, seems that’s the way the Sicilians drive.
