Evening on the beach
A pleasant drive today, heading further north on the east coast of Sicily using the motorway. Caught our first glimpse of Mt Etna as we came into Catania, it was very hazy and thought maybe we wouldn’t see it clearly but as we drove around the base it was very clear and could see the smoke puffing out of it and the ash down the side. We stopped at a small town to do a grocery shop and there was Etna above us. Noticing a big difference to the countryside, much steeper and rockier with a lot more vegetation than we have seen over the last week. Looking up it somehow reminds us of coastal New Zealand. Destination today was a Camping Paradiso, a camp that had been recommended to us by several people and what a great one, very friendly and good facilities. Its right beside the beach with camping sites underneath olive trees. Not many free spaces when we arrived but have a nice spot one row back. A relaxing afternoon which included my first swim, the water is a little fresh but just so clear. The beach is sandy with waves break over quite large round pebbles which move under your feet, making it a little unstable, but it felt so good and cooling. Planning a bus trip into the nearby town of Taormina tomorrow, wanted to go early but first bus not until 10.30. Hopefully it won’t get too hot.
Mt Etna, with a bit of "puff" going on.

Incredible how these villages have been
built in such precarious places.
Guess the defence would have been good

A perfect spot.

...and more umbrellas and chairs.
