Monday May 20, Near Emopli…again!

Another day and more stormy skies.

After many comments from people that we must not miss Florence, this morning we had a re-think. Initially planned to drive to a camping site in the suburbs of Florence where we could catch a bus into the city, but Daniela (the camp host) said she was very happy to take us to the train in Empoli tomorrow morning and pick us up when we return, evidently she offers that service. Perfect. Ended up going for a drive to the neighbouring town to stock up the cupboards and also call at a hardware shop for Ian.
Put the co-ordinates into the GPS and set off on what I thought was a direct route, but Jilly had a different idea and before we knew it we were on an extremely narrow road. Poor Ian, not sure what we would have done had we met a car but luckily, we made it, and after about 7 kms made it out to the main road that we should have been on. Great relief. I realise that I have to be much more diligent and always double check the route she is taking us on, all takes time but much better than getting us in these situations.
Found Lidl very easily and it had plenty of parking. We have been pretty impressed with these discount stores throughout Europe and they seem to have very good produce as well as everything else we need. Not the selection as in more upmarket stores, but the prices are very good. We had a good stock up. By this stage it was pouring with rain again as we rushed next door to the hardware store and had a good mooch around. Ian found most of the bits and pieces he wanted.
It has been a real mix of weather again today, sometimes hot and sunny and then cooling off and raining. It seemed a good idea to come back to the camp and have a relaxing afternoon, making sure that we took the slightly longer route home!
Only a few photos today, will probably make up for it tomorrow!

A lone poppy, a bit weather beaten from the rain!

I’m pleased you’ve made the decision to go to Florence, it really is a lovely city. Sounds like you had some “white knuckle”moments with Jilly’s effort. I recall “Ella on the dash” did likewise with us too, and we only had a little rental.

Hi All, Oh yes, Jilly was really bad, we need to have some serious talking! It has rained through the night but stopped now although in thick fog. Certainly not good for photography! Jen, don’t think we will get to the gallery as understand there are long queues. But will see.
