A pretty good spot to spend the night! |
Ian
has very kindly passed his cold onto me, so both of us have been coughing and
feeling a bit under the weather today. I had my 10 o’clock hair appointment,
and will say that I have never had such a short cut!!!! I won’t be sharing any
photos for a few weeks, but the good part is that I won’t need to have it cut
again before I get back to NZ!! The joys of having your hair cut when you can’t
speak the language, and google translate didn’t seem to help.
After
I got back we walked into town and down to the harbour, everything is a bit
grey after the rain. It is a really nice town, and has a great relaxed
atmosphere. People were wandering around, chatting, and sitting at one of the
many cafes. Like most Spanish towns, there are many multi storied apartment
blocks surrounding the centre of town, and not a lot of traffic. Lots of really
nice shops and wonderful deli’s and meat shops.
Several
weeks ago, we met Herber and Maria and their two children at a camp. They were
so friendly and offered us so much good advice about Spain. And they were very
keen for us to call in and see them at their home. They live in the country
only 15 minutes from Candas and they invited us to join them for a meal this
afternoon. We feel so privileged to have the opportunity be part of a Spanish
family and had a very special afternoon. They both speak good English and their
elder daughter who is 7 is also learning. Herber is a commercial artist and
works from home, and Maria who has a history degree is going to be a secondary
school teacher. Herber was keen to show us the traditional way to drink cider,
which is made in this region. The bottle is held very high and poured into the
glass which is held low and has the effect of releasing the acids. It was fun
and the cider tasted good. Maria had made a really nice meal and it was
finished with a cheese board of three different local cheeses, grapes and
cooked quinces. All extremely good. It was a really great afternoon, even
though the rain came and we were unable to eat outside.
After
calling into a local store and topping up supplies we drove 15 minutes to a
lighthouse at the end of the peninsula where it was okay to park for the night.
Had a walk around the point but decided not to stay as Herber had mentioned a
great spot to camp a further 10 minutes along the coast. Tonight we are parked
in a field overlooking the coast and a surfing beach. Really great, although
the road in was rather “interesting”!! Think we will spend a few days here
resting up and see if we can get on top of these colds.
