The old station at Tua

This site has a direct hook up to water which was an ideal opportunity to clean out our water tank. There were a few bits in it which kept blocking up the pump, so we drained it and I got in and wiped it all out while Ian cleaned all the filters. Ran a bit of bleach through the system before refilling and it is all working so much better. With a few chores done we walked to the railway station for the 11 o’clock train up the Douro Valley. There were many people waiting and when the train pulled in there were not many spare seats so ended up standing part of the way. Had a long chat with an English couple who have been staying in a holiday let on a vineyard in Regua for the past 10 days, and they had some great tips about taking the train to Porto which we are keen to do, rather than driving in. They have used the train twice and thoroughly recommended it. We really enjoyed todays trip as the line runs right beside the river with views of the vine covered hills on the other side. Just couldn’t get over how steep it was and the sheer number of vines. Evidently harvest is just starting.
Our French neighbour recommended getting off at the small town of Tua where there was a very good restaurant. After just over an hour on the train we pulled in to Tua where there is not much else but obviously the restaurant has a good reputation as a number of others got off as well.
It was really good to sit in the air conditioning and look out over the river and the vine covered hills. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and the house wine supplied by a local winery was extremely good. Wandered back to the station for the 2 o’clock train, which ended up running 20 minutes late. By now the temperatures had risen but it was cool inside the old railway station. These old buildings have an old world charm to them with tiles on the walls.
Got good seats and sat back an enjoyed a very comfortable and scenic ride. It has been a very relaxing day which Ian thoroughly enjoyed, sitting back and being able to have a good look at the scenery.
We are going to have an early start tomorrow and catch the 6.50am train into Porto which arrives at 9.00 am. Looking forward to it.

Sounds like the train was a winner. So there are still jobs that have to be done even when your on the road!
