Tuesday May 16, Murbach

Evening at the Abbey

After spending the last two nights at wineries, tonight, for a change we are parked in the grounds of a Romanesque Abbey nestled in a valley surrounded by tree covered hills and a stream babbling away behind us…and we are the only ones here. Just perfect.
This morning we were on the road by 10 and headed for the Post Office in Guebwiller where I was to collect a parcel of maps for my membership with French Passion. We headed south and took a route close to the Rhine through large stretches of cropping land. Really enjoyed the drive on such a fine sunny morning. Spotted a boulangerie beside the road so picked up a baguette for lunch…and a very naughty treat of an almond croissant. Stopped beside the Rhine for a coffee and the croissant, which we shared, and it was sooo good.
Loved the way they tied the baguette up.
Continued on towards Guebwiller but as we still haven’t been able to get our Michelin map book of France we had a few issues finding the route, but eventually arrived and parked about 500m from the Post Office. But we forgot that many places in France close between 12 and 2 including the Post Office – we had arrived at 1.30. I wonder what people do with a two hour lunch break!  We found the Information Centre and the guy spoke very good English and answered a number of questions. We could get a map at the book shop (La Post) which opened at 1.45 and we needed to go to a mall at a neighbouring town to get a French Sim card with the Orange network. The lady in the book shop spoke no English, but with a spattering of French and sign language we found what we needed so we are set now for France. There was a queue outside the Post Office for the 2 o’clock opening, only to find that we needed to go to another Post Office at the other side of town to get parcels. By the time we got back to the van it was getting quite warm, and we hadn’t had lunch so decided to leave the parcel and Sim card until tomorrow and head into the hills about 10 minutes away where I had found an Aire in the grounds of an abbey which was shaded by trees. Sounded pretty good.
Spotted this in a shop window in Guebwiller..not sure of the significance.
Arrived and very happy with the site, which is shaded by trees which was rather nice. Enjoyed the baguette with some cheese and salami and a cold beer. We wandered up to the abbey through the gate houses and just so picturesque. Inside the air was so cool after the afternoon heat and with the music plying softly transported me back to the time of the abbey. There is no internet here so can’t google the details tonight. Beautiful gardens with peonies about to flower. Snuck a few flowers for a jam jar arrangement in the van.
A very pleasant place to be on a hot afternoon and this evening I had my shower then found they had turned the lights on the abbey, so pulled some clothes on, grabbed the camera and tripod and walked up to the Abbey. Such a balmy evening, and just so quiet.
