Sunday May 21, Louhans

An arrangement of wild roses in a jam jar this morning.

Really enjoyed our overnight at Oreglet,  and not woken by early sun as we were shaded by the trees. Saw an Aire on a river at the town of Louhans that rather appealed so we took the route to Cressia which passed through a lot of farm land. Saw several reasonable size herds of cows on the flats which we understand are part of the cheese making industry in this area. It was such a beautiful morning and we thoroughly enjoyed winding through the hills, with little grassy areas among the trees with so many different colours of wildflowers.  Continued on to Lons le Saunier and Louhans on very good roads that weren’t too busy.
Could be NZ
Arrived in town and found there was a huge motorbike rally, bikers everywhere, so after settling into camp and having lunch we wandered back into town. It was a little bit like a mini Sturgis with so many stalls selling biker gear, music playing, food stalls and a great place to people watch. A great way to spend a few hours this afternoon. Checked out the older part of town which had some really old buildings and interesting architecture with arches over the pavement. Understand market day is in this area tomorrow so will have to go and have a lookl
Later this afternoon got the bikes out and set out along the path beside the river, it started well but soon became a rather bumpy gravel path. There were many people dotted along the river, fishing, not sure what they were after and didn’t see anything caught – and couldn’t ask them what they were trying to catch. A bit of a mystery but they were all enjoying a warm sunny Sunday afternoon beside the river. Continued on out to a road and did a loop back to camp. Part of it was on a busy road and felt a little nervous, but we managed fine. Ian keeps reminding me to “put my big boy pants on”!!! Just gaining confidence, it really is years since I have ridden! Only 9 kms today.

A very balmy warm evening, the Aire is pretty full with over 20 motorhomes.  We had some Charolais steak for dinner which was really good, our first steak in Europe this year and only €7 which was enough for both of us so will be watching out for more.
Built for three.

Interesting sights this afternoon

The Gendarmes were there keeping an eye on the bikers.

Ian spotted this woman looking down on the street,

The old main street.

Cherry's won't be far away.

A group of horses on our ride this afternoon, sorry to see
so many flies on them.

Enjoyed have a French catchup this morning! New adventures every day, but the language barrier must be tiresome at times. I guess laughter is the best way around it, and recall in Ireland we couldn't get the gist of what some were saying....so we all just laughed. And they speak English (supposedly). We (as in Focus) have had three days on the Otago Peninsula, the weather on the Saturday proved a challenge, photographers are stoic (or stupid) .....snowed, hailed, gale winds, rain for 24 hours.
Anyrate, love following your travels. I'm off to google the villages you are travelling through to give me an idea of your position

Glad you are enjoying France!!!....certainly the weather is making it very nice, much warmer than last year. You have reminded me, I must do a map of where we have been and share it. Off shortly to walk into town where there is evidently a good Monday market. Language is an issue and we are finding very few people in France who speak English. My spattering of schoolgirl French is helping a little but you can't have a conversation..
You Focus people really are a hardy lot, hope the resulting images are worth it!!

Hi Meg and Ian,
Just caught up on about 2 weeks of blog! Sounds wonderful and so glad you got the bikes. They are a wonderful way of seeing the countryside and give you a better range than walking - and you always have a breeze on your face! Were most interested in your Rhine photos as we will be there in a month's time on our river cruise Budapest to Amsterdam. We intend to do lots of cycling as well. Will tell Joan O'Sullivan you're using your 5th form French to good use! Ian I think it is most unkind what people have been saying about you and lycra! Enjoy guys and will keep up to date from now on. Love B and J - the Coxes.
