Saturday August 13 Hesserdorf – Glucksburg

"Keeping your ducks all in a row"!!  Loved these wee paddle boats. The weather was too windy and cold for customers.

After a good night’s sleep we were up and away this morning by 8.30. Loved the drive from the campsite back to the “Autobahn” (must use the correct term!), passing little villages with century old houses with cattle barns attached and a number of thatched roof houses. The fields growing maize for the stock and barley were all so tidy, and the streets were lined with trees. Such a different world.
Then it was back on the highway with Jilly set to take us to Flensburg, which meant passing through the centre of Hamburg, and that meant we had to cross the Elbe River. No sweat….there was a huge tunnel that was several km’s long (I think) taking our 2 lanes north, but there were also 2 others going north in different directions, which equals 6 lanes, and we guess the same number coming south. Sorry, very little internet so can’t google and find out exactly! So pleased though that we didn’t try to do this in the rush hour last night as the roads were still pretty busy, but Jilly had us organised to “t”. There seemed to be a lot of holiday traffic heading north, cars loaded up with gear and lots of campers and caravans. There are lots of beaches on both sides of this peninsula and they are a holiday destination. Although todays weather felt less than summery with a cold wind and odd showers of rain.
We detoured to Husum and checked out the coast but not that inviting, so after a coffee break we continued on towards Flensburg. The highway was closed with roadworks so Jilly had us “recalculating” until we found ourselves back on the main road. Decided to head to the holiday peninsula of Glucksburg, couldn’t park in town as very busy so continued on to the end of the peninsula where we had spotted a campground. Looked great and as it was almost 2pm we decided to camp up. It has been quite a busy few days on the road as we head to Scandinavia and it was good to have a relaxing afternoon.
In between the squalls we donned raincoats and went for a good long walk along the beach front. Strangely for a mid-August Saturday, the beach front ice cream shops were all closed, not sure if this is the end of their summer holidays or what.

Beautiful country roads as we left camp.
The entrance to the tunnel under Hamburg

Delightful thatched roof houses

These cane beach huts/chairs are rented out...intriguing to see them all lined up.
