Friday July 8 Boston

The Boston Stomp in the centre of town.
It’s been a very good day with everything finally put in place for the registration of the van…although the process will probably take about 10 days. But now we can make plans and have booked a car for next Tuesday. Steve is so organised and has been such a help with the paperwork, really don’t know how we would have managed without him.
We all went into Boston this afternoon, to me it is a quintessential English town with small lanes, old buildings, town square and a very, very old church in the centre built in the 1300’s. The church is one of the largest parish churches in England and also has one of tallest Medieval towers, which is why it is called “The Boston Stump”. I guess after we have been in Europe for a while these sort of things will become normal, but at the moment I am just all eyes. It was so pleasant wondering around, the sun was shining and quite warm. We had coffee and cake sitting outside in the town centre, and blow the diet….I had a scone with jam and clotted cream. Perfect
Had been researching getting internet while we are travelling and the answer seemed to be a portable Mifi unit which would act as a hotspot for the laptop as well as the iPad. I ordered a Huawei unit from Amazon which arrived yesterday. Had heard about the Three network as having data plans that could be used in most European countries (except Germany and Netherlands) so we called into the Three shop in town. The guy was so helpful and after listening to our situation suggested we get a rolling contract that gives us 15gb of data a month for 20 Pound a month, and we cancel it 30 days before we leave. Perfect, except they needed a UK credit card to charge it to!!! Steve to the rescue…again. We registered it in his name and his card, and after 30 days I can go online and change it to my name and my credit card…all sorted! Tick that one off the list.
Called into the second hand book store and picked up a bundle of books for the trip, somehow don’t think we will be able to buy English books in Europe.
Wandered around the church with Guide Steve telling us about the history of it. Evidently during the Second World War the Germans used it as a landmark which saved it from being bombed.
It was such a balmy evening, we popped out in the car and walked through a really nice riverside park then guide Steve took us on a “tiki” tour around the surrounding countryside.
Woke this morning with the start of a head cold…courtesy of Ian who developed one before we left NZ, just a nuisance.
And thanks to everyone for the comments on the blog, so appreciate hearing from you, haven’t had a chance to respond yet!
Dave and his two Yorkies...has a nephew in NZ, somewhere near the hot springs, where the maori's are!

Carolena, lovely Polish girl who owns the cake shop - spent 2 months in NZ and wanted to stay.

Who is counting the calories!

The lads...again.
Tried a hand held panorama with my small camera...more practice required!

Great journal Meg and good to hear the van is now sorted. Love the pix too and would love to have had a wander and dive into the Magpie's Nest.

HI Vicki...certainly everything is so vastly different and we have only been in one little corner. Loving the history and Steve is a great historian and makes it so interesting.

HI Jen, Yes, everything is sorted, just need to let the paperwork happen...which seems to take ages. But actually looking forward to having a car for a week or so and doing some exploring. Haven't done any van shopping yet, so will do that next week and will be good not to have to rush.

HI Richard, Haven't as yet been to a pub, were going to the other evening while out driving but we were all a bit jaded. Off to a very Posh pub lunch today...will report back on it.

Very pleased to hear that you have discovered that most of the population live in the big cities and that the countryside is quite charming. Enjoy discovering more of it next week. While I was driving around the countryside in 1997 I stumbled upon a very pretty town by the name of Saffron Walden - if you are close by it's worth taking a detour through - the original home of saffron! Best wishes Anne & Bruce (who now has the cold)
