Tuesday Nov 26 Bear Paw RV Park, Eager AZ
San Miguel Catholic Church, Socorro |
Have to say
last night was not one of our favourites campgrounds….the train lines were
nearby and about every 2 hours a train went through and sounded its horn
multiple times, did seem like it was right beside the RV! There had been a good
frost overnight so were a tad sluggish heading off this morning.
Went into
Socorro, a town we had stayed in on our trip south a few weeks ago, as wanted
to get a service done on Ruakiwi. After trying a few places, ended up at a great garage and didn’t have to
wait too long to have her serviced and filters dealt too. Good to get that job
done.
We are
heading to Tucson
but decided to take a trip through the mountains now that the weather has
improved. Have had a great afternoon drive through some great ranch country as
well as interesting places and towns, and still a lot of snow lying around.
Pretty impressive to see these in the middle of a huge plain. |
Couldn’t
work out what all the towers were on the plains soon after leaving Socorro but
realised when we got closer that they were part of the Very Large Array (VAL)
Radio Telescope. Checked online and found out that there were a total of 27
dishes in this large basin and they look into the outer edges of our universe.
Obviously a very scientific place, decided that the visitors centre may well be
beyond us!!!!
Soon came
across the old town of Magdalena, with many old
buildings dating back to the time when it was a major town on the cattle trail
from Arizona to New Mexico.
Continued
on west, and were surprised at the great ranch country we passed through and
probably the largest number of cattle we have seen in recent times.
It was
getting dark when we got to Springerville and the RV parks looked pretty seedy
with a lot of permanent campers, but checked on line (always so pleased to have
our little wifi hotspot in times like this!) and came to the neighbouring town
of Eager and found a really good RV park.
Here's another Airstream for you Lynn!!!! |
Love the old signs on buildings |
