This house in Madrid needed some TLC. |
Friday
November 15, Socorro, NM
Did a
little shopping this morning in town before heading back south to Albuquerque. With a little
more time up our sleeve we took the Turquoise Trail rather than the interstate,
its a scenic route through an old mining area east of the mountains. Madrid was a coal mining
town supplying the Santa Fe Railroad and the US Government, but when coal use
declined it became a ghost town. In the early 70’s artists and craftspeople
arrived, and converted the old houses and stores into galleries to sell their
wares, and today it is still very simple and has none of the gliztiness” of
similar towns. We enjoyed wandering along the narrow main street and popping
into the galleries.
Back in Albuquerque we gave
Ruakiwi a “bath”. We have been communicating with a couple from South Arizona who are interested in buying the RV at the
end of our travels, so have arranged to meet them in South West New Mexico on
Monday. Change of plans for us, as were
heading to Texas,
but will continue on there after Monday’s meeting.
Left
Albuquerque on the I25 south, had heard that there was a wind warning and we
were really buffeted for the first half hour before it seemed to ease a bit.
Thunderstorms were also predicted and as we arrived in Socorro the rain had
started and it was already getting dark so decided to overnight at Walmart
(sorry Sherry!!!). Actually quite nice and quiet with four other RV’s overnighting
with us.
