We had
talked a lot about our dream of taking a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon, so last night I went online and booked a
10am flight. There was a wind warning for today so weren’t sure if we would be
able to make it, but went to the airport which is just outside the park
grounds, and the wind was pretty gusty.
Finally
they said YES!!! It would be a shorter flight, only 30 mins, not the 45 minute
we were booked on and it was going to be the last for the day and probably for
the next few days as the forecast was not good.
It was
worth every cent…..an absolute highlight. We flew with a company called
Maverick, Corey the pilot was excellent, the flight was a little bit bumpy
because of the turbulence but you will be pleased to know I didn’t get sick!!

Flying over the edge, the canyon just dropped away. |
We still
find it hard to comprehend the sheer size and scale of the canyon, every view
is WOW material.
It was hard
coming down to earth afterwards, but walked (or should I say were blown) around
the canyon village. Enjoyed the exhibition at the Kolb Gallery of canyon
paintings completed during a “Plein Air” competition held in September.
I was
determined to get out again and see the sunset at a different location on the
rim, hoping that it would be as good as last night, even with the howling gale,
but there were too many clouds although did manage a few shots that I was happy
with. It has been a busy day, but feel we have got the feel of the Canyon. Snow
showers predicted overnight, very happy that Ruakiwi has a good heating system!
